Primers in Indian Languages
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage (NCF-FS) has emphasised the use of the child’s mother tongue, home language, local language, or regional language for teaching-learning at foundational stage (3-8 Years).
The Government of India has initiated the programs Bal Vatika and Basic Literacy. Children in numerous regions of Bharata encounter challenges in comprehending the language that is being instructed at educational institutions. To address this issue, it is essential to overcome the challenge faced by children to use terms in their mother tongue, local language, or the language spoken at home. It is important to provide children with comprehensive reading and writing skill, including both letter recognition and the ability to understand and interpret written text. Keeping this in view, NCERT, New Delhi and Central Institute of Indian Language (CIIL), Mysore, have been developed a total of 52 Primers in Indian Languages. These 52 Primers in Indian Languages were released on 9th March 2024. These Primers are going to become a source of inspiration for the educational agencies to promote mother tongue based multilingual education and enable students develop critical understanding of various concepts. These Primers have been uploaded on NCERT web portal.
