National population Education Project

National Population Education Project (NPEP) was launched in India in 1980 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), as an integral part of the Quality improvement in Schools. It is a value laden concept funded by the Government of India and implemented in all the states and Union Territories of India. The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) coordinates the implementation of the Project at the National and State level. The Programme provides for a study of the population situation in family, the Community, Nation and the World with the purpose of developing in the student’s rational and responsible attitude and behaviour towards the situation.

The reconceptualized framework of Population Education views it as an Educational Process to develop in learners n understanding of inter- relationships between population and development, causes and consequences of population change and the criticality of the condition for population stabilization. There is great need for Population Education in schools as young people of today will constitute the adult population in coming years. It is their reproductive behaviour when they become adult which is going to affect considerably the population situation in future. In order to achieve population stabilization the future parents, adolescents must be involved.

Objective of Population Education:

  • Making Learners aware of the interrelationships between population and sustainable development.
  • Developing in them and understanding of the criticality of essentials conditions of population stabilization for better quality of life of present and future generations.
  • Inculcating in them and understanding rational attitude and responsible behaviour towards population and development issues.
  • Making them understand the crucial aspects of adolescent reproductive health, focusing on the elements of process of growing ups and implications of HIV/AIDS and drug abuse.
  • Inculcating in them rational attitude towards sex, drugs and promoting respect for the opposite sex.
  • Empowering them to take informed decisions on issues of Population and development including those of reproductive health.

Curricular Activities and Adolescence Education

School education aims at all-round development of the learners. Co-curricular approach may prove effective especially in an innovative area like adolescence education. In order to initiate the teaching in this curricular concern forthwith, therefore, co-curricular activities can prove very handy. Moreover, even though the desired integration of adolescence education is actualized, all its concerns may not be covered through textbooks of the subjects presently being taught at the school stage. Co-curricular activities will facilitate the coverage of entire content of adolescence education.

Life Skill Development through Co-curricular Approach

Co-curricular approach has a special significance for this curricular area. One of the main aims of adolescence education is the development of life skills relating to adolescent reproductive and sexual health concerns among learners, besides making them aware of and developing in them positive attitudes towards these concerns. Co-curricular activities may be used as an effective pedagogical method to realize the objective of development of life skills among the learners. Appropriately designed co-curricular activities aimed at skill development may provide opportunities to learners to participate in learning experiences on an individual basis or in groups. Since these activities lay special emphasis on experiential learning, learners will be engaged in a dynamic teaching-learning process, which will lead them to an active acquisition, processing and structuring of experiences.
